The 12th Conference on Modification, Degradation, and Stabilization of Polymers (MoDeSt 2026) was held in Lyon, France, from August 31 to September 3, 2026. The international conference brought together researchers working on the modification, degradation, and stabilization of polymer materials. Kamila Salasińska, professor at Warsaw University of Technology, participated in the conference and delivered a presentation entitled „Sustainable flame retardant system with thermally modified plant waste for engineering plastics”.

The presentation focused on research carried out as part of the project „Innovative use of lignocellulosic material as a component of the flame-retardant system of polymer products for electrical industry and electromobility”.

The project aims to develop a new generation of flame-retardant systems for polymer composites based on thermally or thermomechanically modified plant-based waste materials. The use of appropriately prepared lignocellulosic components together with synthetic flame retardants is intended to create a synergistic effect and effectively reduce the flammability of polyamide-based composites reinforced with inorganic fibers.

The materials under development are intended for applications where fire safety is a key requirement, including electrical engineering and electromobility. At the same time, using waste from the agri-food industry as a component of flame-retardant systems supports the principles of the circular economy by reducing the use of synthetic raw materials and creating new applications for waste materials.

The project is being carried out under the LIDER programme, funded by the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR).
