BioCAN Project Consortium Meeting

BioCAN Project Consortium Meeting

On September 17-18, the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology hosted the second of three scheduled meetings of the international BioCAN project consortium – „Development of bio-based polymers with covalently adaptable networks for recyclable natural fibre reinforced composite production.” Representatives of all institutions and companies involved in the project attended the meeting.

The project is coordinated by the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry. The consortium also includes the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS), Charles University, TU Dresden, the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology, and two companies – the Polish firm NOMA Resins sp. z o.o. and the German firm Leichtbau-Zentrum Sachsen GmbH. The project manager representing Warsaw University of Technology is Kamila Sałasińska, PhD DsC.

The first day was devoted to matters related to project management and implementation, while on the second day, the partners presented the progress made in their respective tasks. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss the next stages of cooperation and plan further activities.

The BioCAN project is now approaching the halfway point, with 17 of its 36 months already completed. "BioCAN aims to revolutionize polymer composite production by incorporating vitrimers made from renewable raw materials, flax fibers, and lignocellulosic-based flame retardant systems. This will reduce dependence on fossil resources, further decrease reliance on imports, and mitigate supply risks, ultimately supporting regional autonomy," says Kamila Sałasińska, PhD. The composites developed in this project could potentially be used in the automotive and transportation industries.

Project BioCAN was selected in the Joint Transnational Call 2024 of M-ERA.NET 3, which is an EU-funded network of 49 funding organisations (Horizon 2020 grant agreement No 958174).The project is funded by the Latvian Council of Science, Latvia, Technology Agency of the Czech Republic, Czech Republic, Poland, European Union and Saxon State Parliament, Germany.
Project is co-funded by the European Union and cofinanced from tax revenues on the basis of the budget adopted by the Saxon State Parliament.
