Research

At the beginning of his scientific career Prof. Oleszak was involved in fabrication and structure and properties studies of metallic glasses, especially from their glass forming ability and surface crystallization effects points of view. Starting form 80s of the 20th century, he started his activity in the area of mechanical alloying (MA). Prof. Oleszak is a founder of the school of MA at the Warsaw University of Technology. The activity of the school resulted in a significant increase of knowledge in the area of structure and properties studies of many materials fabricated by MA. For more than 30 years Prof. Oleszak is involved in powder metallurgy studies of metallic and ceramic materials manufactured by MA followed by powder compaction. The main issues are concentrated on the thermodynamically nonequilibrium alloys, like amorphous or nanocrystalline, and the investigations of their phase composition,  thermal stability and properties. His pioneer studies include titanium alloys (Ti-Al, Ti-Si), iron alloys (Fe-Ni, Fe-Co, Fe-Mo, Fe-W, Fe-Nb, Fe-Zn, Fe-Ge) investigated also from magnetic properties point of view, Ni-Mo alloys for electrocatalytic applications, intermetallics from the Ni-Al and Fe-Al systems and their composites with TiC, NbC, Al2O3, ZrO2. The next topics include Aurivillius phases as multiferroic materials and LiLaZrO-type ceramics for solid state electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries. Currently Prof. Oleszak is working in the area of High Entropy Alloys (HEA) and their composites, manufactured by MA or traditional metallurgy (casting).
